New South Wales Premier Mike Baird has announced that a state memorial service will be held to honour the life of Australia batsman Phil Hughes, who passed away yesterday.
The 25-year-old suffered vertebral artery dissection when he was struck in the neck by a bouncer bowled by Sean Abbott during a Sheffield Shield match in Sydney.
The cricketer failed to regain consciousness after undergoing surgery at St Vincent's hospital and died two days after the incident occurred.
Today, Baird confirmed that a service will be held at the Sydney Cricket Ground, where Hughes collapsed, but a date is yet to be arranged.
"This service has been arranged in consultation with Phillip's family, and it will be an opportunity for the entire community to pay their respects to a much-loved Australian and New South Welshman," said Baird.
"The state memorial service will be held at the Sydney Cricket Ground, with a date and other details to be advised in due course."
Thousands of tributes have been made throughout the cricket world, while many have held vigils outside of the SCG and the Adelaide Oval.
