Team Wales boxer Fred Evans denied Commonwealth Games accreditation

Team Wales welterweight boxer Fred Evans will not compete at the Commonwealth Games after his accreditation was refused, Chef de Mission Brian Davies confirms.

Team Wales boxer Fred Evans, who won silver at the London 2012 Olympic Games for Great Britain, has been refused accreditation to compete in the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and did not travel with the team on Tuesday.

The team's chef de mission Brian Davies revealed that Wales did everything they could for the athlete to be allowed to compete and said that they are unhappy with the ultimate decision.

"Team Wales can confirm that boxer Fred Evans has had his accreditation refused by Glasgow 2014 based on checks completed by the Home Office and the Commonwealth Games Accreditation Decision Board," a statement from the team read. "Sadly, he is therefore unable to compete at the Commonwealth Games.

"We have engaged in rigorous and thorough communications with all relevant bodies over the last few weeks, including putting forward two mitigation plans, unfortunately all of which have been unsuccessful.

"The key Welsh and British sporting agencies have been supportive in our attempts to get Fred to the Games and we are bitterly disappointed at the outcome."

Welterweight Evans lost in the 2012 final to Serik Sapiyev of Kazakhstan.
