Welsh boxer Ashley Brace barred from Glasgow Commonwealth Games

Welsh boxer Ashley Brace is barred from competing at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games due to her kickboxing background.

Welsh boxer Ashley Brace has been barred from competing at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games due to her kickboxing background.

The 23-year-old was hoping to battle Olympic gold medallist Nicola Adams in the 51kg category as women's boxing prepares to make its debut at the Games.

Team Wales chef de mission Brian Davies said: "AIBA (International Boxing Association) have taken the decision to refuse approval for her accreditation due to her previous involvement at the 2013 Unified Kickboxing World Championships which makes her ineligible to compete.

"The Welsh Boxing Association has contacted AIBA to clarify this decision and accepts their ruling.

'Ashley is a fantastic young athlete with bags of potential and both Welsh Boxing and the Commonwealth Games Council for Wales are saddened that she now won't have the opportunity to compete at the Games in just two weeks' time."

The opening ceremony for the Games in Scotland's biggest city takes place later this month on July 23.
