Sean Duffy puts distractions aside

Northern Ireland boxer Sean Duffy vows to put all distractions aside as he attempts to win a medal at this summer's Commonwealth Games.

Northern Ireland boxer Sean Duffy has claimed that he is putting all distractions aside as he attempts to win a medal at this summer's Commonwealth Games.

The 23-year-old booked his spot in the quarter-finals of the Light Welterweight division on Sunday after overcoming Fabiani Gaudence Pius.

"It is hard, but we are well-trained. All the coaches help us, we go through it every training session," Duffy told Sports Mole immediately after the fight.

"There has been meetings and all sorts just to get us used to dealing with media and to block out the distractions. The likes of social media, it is about putting it aside until the Games are over because it is only a short space of time and your dream could be gone."

Duffy also spoke about headguards, which have been omitted from this summer's Games.

"Personally I like it (fighting without one). If you are looking to go into a career after boxing then the next step up is professional and there is no point getting used to a headguard if you are going to be jumping into the ring and boys are going to be hitting you without one.

"We still use them for sparring and safety precautions because of the cuts and stuff, but to me it is the same with a headguard and without one."

Duffy's next opponent is Khir Akyazian Azmi.
