Connor Coyle: 'Now I will step it up'

Northern Ireland boxer Connor Coyle hails his "important" Commonwealth Games victory over Lungile Dyamdeki in Glasgow.

Northern Ireland boxer Connor Coyle has vowed to continue improving after getting his Commonwealth Games challenge underway with victory on Saturday afternoon.

The middleweight overcame Lungile Dyamdeki in Glasgow to set up a clash with either Dennis Thomas or Jonathon Keama in the next round of the competition.

"I was just holding the pace up and not trying to rush in and make any mistakes. I knew I had it there and I fought the fight that I wanted to," he told Sports Mole.

"It was important to get the first bout out of the way and get the rustiness away. I will step it up now as the tournament goes on."

Coyle also had his say on the omission of headguards for this summer's Games, admitting that there are both pros and cons to the rule change.

"It is a bit dodgy with the possible clashing of heads and even elbows, but I like it like this. I feel the punches a lot more and they feel mine when I land them," he added.

Coyle's next fight will be on Monday.
