Ireland's Paddy Barnes suffers shock defeat in last-16 fight at Rio Olympics

Ireland's Paddy Barnes loses to Spain's Samuel Carmona Heredia on points in the last-16 fight at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Ireland's flagbearer Paddy Barnes suffered a shock exit from the Olympics after losing to Spain's Samuel Carmona Heredia on points in a last-16 bout in Rio de Janeiro on Monday.

The 29-year-old, who took bronze at the Beijing and London Games, competed in the men's 49kg (light-flyweight) division.

Barnes had to come from behind after he lost the first round to Heredia, but he managed to draw level in the second.

It was a tight third round, but a split decision ended in favour of the Spaniard, who remains in contention for a medal while Barnes's campaign is over.

The Irishman edged the third round 29-28 on the scorecard of the Chinese judge, but the Canadian and Uzbekistani judges gave Heredia the round 29-28.

After the fight, Barnes confirmed that he will not compete at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
