Eight boxers from Team GB qualify for Olympics

Eight Team GB boxers book their spot at the 2016 Olympic Games, while beaten Anthony Fowler will have the chance to make it nine this weekend.

Eight members of the Team GB boxing squad have booked a spot at the 2016 Olympic Games.

The only British boxer to fall at the semi-final stage was Anthony Fowler, but the middleweight will still have the chance to secure his spot at Rio in the bronze-medal bout on Saturday.

Nicola Adams, who won gold at London 2012, showed the way as the 33-year-old overcame Norway's Marielle Hansen at the European qualifying event in Samsun, Turkey.

The shock of the day came from the inexperienced Lawrence Okolie, who dominated world number three Abdulkadir Abdullayev to make the gold medal bout at 91kg and defy his underdog tag.

Galal Yafai was the first Brit to secure his spot at the Olympics, with the 23-year-old outpointing Spain's Samuel Carmona Heredia in the light-flyweight semi-finals.

Qais Ashfaq quickly made it two from two as the Leeds bantamweight survived a bloody contest against Ukrainian fourth seed Mykola Butsenko to secure his spot in Rio.

Fowler lost his semi-final to the Frenchman Mbilli Assomo, but the Liverpool-born fighter will have a second chance to secure his own position when he returns to the ring this weekend.

Muhammad Ali overcame his nemesis Daniel Asenov at 52kg to make it five for Team GB in impressive fashion, before classy Welshman Joe Cordina overcame Ireland's David Joyce at lightweight to secure his position at the Games.

Joshua Buatsi, fighting at light heavyweight, also booked his spot in the final of the European qualifiers and indeed a position at the Games with a points win over Oleksandr Khyzhniak.

The eighth and final boxer to qualify was super-heavyweight and number one seed Joe Joyce, who powered his way past Hungary's Istvan Bernath, forcing three standing counts in the last round, to make his first Olympics.
