On this day: David Haye beats Nikolai Valuev to win WBA heavyweight title

On this day in 2009, David Haye beat Nikolai Valuev in Nuremberg to become the WBA heavyweight champion.

On this day in 2009, David Haye proved his critics wrong by overcoming a huge challenge to claim the WBA heavyweight title in Nuremberg.

For months leading up to the bout with Nikolai Valuev, people questioned whether Haye had what it takes to beat the 7' Russian, but the Brit produced a fantastic performance to join the elite in the heavyweight division.

Haye headed into the fight seven stone lighter than his rival, but he made sure Valuev could not dominate in the way he had envisioned due to a tactical masterclass.

A common theme was quickly established early in the bout as Haye used quick feet to keep his distance on the way to taking the opening three rounds with a number of quick combinations.

Valuev improved in the fourth round, but Haye was back in charge in the fifth with a stunning left hook which invited a big reaction from the travelling British supporters.

Despite tiring as the fight progressed, the fighter from Bermondsey was still causing damage with his ability to produce sudden bursts of energy.

Heading into the latter stages, Valuev knew he would need a knockout to retain his title, but it was Haye who almost achieved what was considered to be impossible before the bout.

A superb left-right combination in the final round shocked Valuev, who lost his balance and appeared to be going to ground, before eventually steadying his feet close to the ropes.

Haye wouldn't get the knockout victory, but he was awarded the bout on a majority decision, with perhaps the only surprise being that one of the judges could not separate the two fighters.

"It's a dream come true. I've fought the biggest heavyweight champion and caught him with big shots," Haye told the crowd after clinching the belt.

"I made him look like an amateur. People doubted my skills, but I did enough to win."

Despite eventually losing the title to Wladimir Klitschko in the summer of 2011, Haye will forever be remembered by his supporters for that brilliant performance against Valuev.

Another comeback is on the horizon in 2015. Can the 34-year-old recapture his best form in the ring?
