England knocked out of Commonwealth Games by Canada

Team England have been knocked out of the men's basketball at the 2018 Commonwealth Games courtesy of a 97-79 defeat at the hands of Canada.

England could only finish second in Pool B to set up a qualifying final with Canada, who were third in Pool A behind Australia and New Zealand, both of whom progressed straight into the semi-finals.

England's hopes of joining them in the last four took an early blow when Canada raced into a commanding lead in the first quarter, going into the first break with a 30-12 advantage.

That lead only grew in the second quarter too, with Canada having one foot in the semi-finals at half time when they went in 55-29 ahead.

England did respond in the second half, outscoring Canada in both quarters to reduce the deficit to 18 at the final buzzer, but the damage had already been done and Canada never looked like surrendering their lead.

The Canadians will now face New Zealand in the semi-finals, but there could still be British interest in the last four should Scotland beat Nigeria in their quarter-final later this evening.
