James Jones delighted with Tristan Thompson extension

James Jones admits that it is a relief to know Tristan Thompson can re-join practice after finally signing a new five-year deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

James Jones has claimed that it was crucial for the Cleveland Cavaliers to end speculation by signing Tristan Thompson to a new five-year contract.

It was revealed on Wednesday that negotiations had finally come to an end as Thompson agreed to an $82m (£53.2m) extension after reports had suggested that the 24-year-old was willing to walk away after becoming a restricted free agent.

NBA rules meant that Thompson could not take part in training camp before a deal was signed, and Jones admits that it is a relief to know that he will finally be able to join practice ahead of Tuesday's season opener against the Chicago Bulls.

"We're excited that Tristan is back," Jones told reporters. "He's a big part of what we do.

"Unfortunately the business aspect of our game slowed us down a little bit. But we have full faith and confidence knowing the way he works that he will get up to speed soon and more importantly knowing that we have that extended depth."

Thompson averaged 8.2 points and 8.0 rebounds per game last season, before registering averages of 9.6 points and 10.8 rebounds across 20 playoff games.
