Jonathan Edwards believes that Chris Tomlinson should have represented Britain at the World Athletics Championships alongside Greg Rutherford.

Two-time triple jump world champion Jonathan Edwards believes that UK Athletics should have taken long jumper Chris Tomlinson to the World Athletics Championship alongside Greg Rutherford.

The Olympic champion was chosen ahead of Tomlinson for the tournament in Moscow after both failed to reach the 'A' qualifying standard of 8.25m.

"I know they're trying to look to reduce numbers but they should be doing that across the board, not just in field events," the London Evening Standard quotes Edwards as saying.

"It doesn't really encourage athletes to take up the field events. Okay, Chris should have probably jumped further this year but the 'A' standard's too high. It would have been just six centimetres off winning Olympic gold last summer, and he could have got a medal in Moscow."

Tomlinson expressed his anger at being left out after Rutherford failed to reach the men's final.
