Lynsey Sharp elated with European 800m silver after hospital stay

Great Britain's Lynsey Sharp, Commonwealth and European silver medalist, admits that she is happy to merely be competing this season after a recent stint in hospital.

Great Britain's Lynsey Sharp has expressed her delight at winning a silver medal in the European Championships women's 800m, admitting that she was unsure of her participation this season after spending time in hospital earlier in the year.

The 24-year-old finished behind Maryna Arzamasova of Belarus in Zurich, where she clocked up a personal best time of 1:58.80.

Sharp told BBC Sport: "I have felt so good all week. I knew I was in personal best shape so even though front-running is totally different for me, I thought I'd just go for it.

"I was in hospital on a drip for two weeks [earlier in the year] and at that point I didn't even know if I was going to have a season.

"So to go on and get a Scottish record, and silver at the Commonwealths and Europeans, is great."

Poland's Joanna Jozwik took bronze in today's race, while British teenager Jess Judd finished in seventh place.
