Chris Tomlinson: 'Leg injury affected qualifying'

Team England long jumper Chris Tomlinson reveals that a troublesome quad injury hindered him in qualifying for the men's final at the Commonwealth Games.

Team England long jumper Chris Tomlinson has revealed that a leg injury hindered him in qualifying for the men's final at the Commonwealth Games.

Middlesbrough-born Tomlinson jumped 7.89m at Hampden Park this morning to book his place in the medal rounds with the sixth-longest qualifying distance.

The 32-year-old was content with the way in which he jumped considering that he is carrying a troublesome quad problem, which he conceded may prevent him from performing to his best in Wednesday's final.

"It was easy enough, but I'm carrying quite a bad leg injury so I couldn't really jump as I wanted," he told reporters.

"I did what I had to do in terms of qualifying, so that was all right. I don't know whether it'll affect me or not – we'll have to wait and see. I'll have to try and nurse it through, and we'll have to see it responds.

"It's the quad again. It was 100 per cent a week or so ago, but now it's started to rear its ugly head again. I'm through to the final, so at least that's out of the way and I can just concentrate on jumping again tomorrow now."

Tomlinson saw his British record broken earlier this year by Greg Rutherford, who also qualified in Glasgow.
