Italy's Mauro Nespoli: 'Gold medal was long overdue'

Italy archer Mauro Nespoli admits that he and teammate Natalia Valeeva were delighted to win their country's first gold medal of the European Games.

Italy archer Mauro Nespoli has revealed his delight after clinching his nation's first gold medal of the European Games.

Nespoli and teammate Natalia Valeeva defeated Georgia's Lasha Pkhakadze and Khatuna Narimanidze 5-3 in the gold-medal match in Baku.

The 27-year-old, who won gold at the London 2012 Olympics, conceded that he and Valeeva were long overdue success in a major event.

He told reporters: "It was time to get another gold. Winning it here fills me with pride. It is the first gold medal for Italy at the European Games and this makes me very proud."

Italy have won seven medals at the Games in Baku.
