NFL to stage regular-season game in Mexico

The NFL announces plans to stage a Monday Night Football game in Mexico City in November.

The NFL has confirmed that it will hold a regular-season game in Mexico City in November.

The Oakland Raiders will face the Houston Texans in the Monday Night Football match on November 21 at the Estadio Azteca, which has a capacity of 95,500 and was the site of Maradona's infamous 'Hand of God' goal.

Mexico previously hosted a regular-season game in 2005, when a crowd of more than 103,000 turned out to see the Arizona Cardinals defeat the San Francisco 49ers at the Azteca.

Since then there have been 14 regular-season matches played at Wembley stadium in London, the success of which has prompted NFL owners to look to stage games in other countries outside of the US and UK.

"Expanding our International Series of regular-season games to Mexico marks an important step in our continued international growth," said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. "We have a tremendous, passionate fan base in Mexico and we know the atmosphere on game day will be outstanding."

The announcement comes just ahead of Super Bowl 50, which will be contested between the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos in San Francisco on Sunday evening.
