Matt Simms: NFL debut was "good experience"

New York Jets quarterback Matt Simms says that making his first appearance in the NFL was a good experience.

Matt Simms has described his NFL debut with the New York Jets this weekend as "a good experience".

The backup quarterback replaced fellow rookie Geno Smith, who had thrown two interceptions and been sacked three times, in the fourth quarter during the AFC East side's 49-9 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals yesterday.

The 25-year-old told reporters: "I was very excited to go in, obviously not under those circumstances. Still, it was a good experience to get out there and just see the field, see the defense, get hit for the first time since pre-season. It was a good experience and now I've just got to go back to work.

"I was excited to be there, it was a spur-of-the-moment decision. I didn't have much time to think about it, running away from people trying to rip my head off. That was my first instinct.

"I'm probably going to get a few messages from my father [former New York Giants QB Phil Simms] telling me to be a little smarter in that situation. I just kind of wanted to show everyone that I'm going to sacrifice and play hard and play till the last play."

The Jets sit second in their division with a 4-4 record.
