Ryan Fitzpatrick tells Todd Bowles he's ready for new season

Ryan Fitzpatrick warns Geno Smith that he will be ready to step into his shoes if he slips up in the opening game.

New York Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has promised that he will be ready to play in the opening game of the season, despite not starting.

Jets coach Todd Bowles admitted that Geno Smith will start the campaign as the number one quarterback, but has warned Fitzpatrick that he could be called upon.

The 32-year-old told reporters: "That's kind of been a lot of my career, not necessarily being the guy right away and having to step in, and not having there be any sort of drop-off.

"That's something that I pride myself on - whether I'm the day one starter or I'm the third-string guy, when I go in there, I'm going to be ready to be able to execute."

Fitzpatrick joined the team from the Houston Texans two month ago.
