Geno Smith has edged the battle of the rookie quarterbacks so far at Meadowlands, with the New York Jets building a 17-6 half-time advantage against the Buffalo Bills.
Smith showed initiative early on to break the deadlock for the Jets, driving over from eight yards to finish off an opening-game drive of 80 yards in the endzone.
Early in the second quarter Buffalo responded to chip away at that advantage, with Dan Carpenter scoring a pair of field goals in quick succession to make it a one-point game.
An aggressive Jets defense then retrieved the ball quickly and made that count with a fine touchdown late in the first half, with Smith finding Stephen Hill for a 51-yard score.
With five seconds left in the half, Nick Folk's boot edged the Jets further ahead as he nailed a 47-yard field goal to give Buffalo plenty to ponder on at the interval.
