New York Giants sign quarterback Josh Freeman

Ex-Minnesota Vikings quarterback Josh Freeman signs for the New York Giants, to play backup to Eli Manning.

The New York Giants have signed Josh Freeman on a one-year deal.

Freeman was cut by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the early part of last season, before signing with the Minnesota Vikings and battling for a starting spot with Christian Ponder and Matt Cassell.

The quarterback only made one start for the Vikings - ironically against the Giants - in a game in which he struggled and was widely criticised for his performance.

Despite that appearance, the Giants invited Freeman to practise with them this week and a contract has been agreed.

First-choice signal caller Eli Manning has recently undergone ankle surgery, so it is expected that Freeman will take over practice duties with the team until the two-time Super Bowl MVP is back to full fitness.

Freeman also recently practised with the Chicago Bears, who required backup Josh McCown to play a number of matches last season following injury to Jay Cutler.
