Marc Trestman: 'Backup quarterbacks are vital'

Marc Trestman believes that the backup quarterback is a huge part of any roster.

Chicago Bears head coach Marc Trestman has admitted that he looks for a lot when deciding on which quarterback to choose as his backup option.

Josh McCown, last year's reserve QB, has left to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Trestman said that he is hoping to be able to bring one in of an equal calibre to push number one Jay Cutler.

"The number one job of the number two quarterback is to be ready to play and to play well," Trestman told the Chicago Tribune. "He has to. The best term is he has to go in and play efficiently.

"He can't turn the ball over. He's got to live for the next play. But he's a very, very important part of your locker room. Because he has to be ready to play efficiently and he's not going to get the reps to do it. That was the number one value of Josh. It still has to go to his ability to play the game if the top guy is hurt."

The Bears finished last season with an 8-8 record.
