Agent: 'Michael Sam draft will be big news'

The agent of Missouri Tigers defensive end Michael Sam talks up the importance of his client being drafted in May.

The agent of Missouri Tigers defensive end Michael Sam has talked up the importance of his client being picked in this year's NFL Draft.

Sam would become the first openly gay player in NFL history if he is chosen, with many experts predicting that he will go somewhere between the third and fifth rounds.

The 24-year-old's announcement that he is gay brought about a huge reaction from people in and out of the sport, and agent Joe Barkett is expecting similar interest when he eventually joins the league in May.

"I expect it to be pretty big. We're working with the NFL right now to see what the most appropriate way there is for Mike to address the media," Barkett told the U-T San Diego.

"Obviously, everybody is going to want to hear what he has to say. He definitely will be addressing the media. We're just trying to figure out what the best forum is for doing that."

Barkett also expressed his belief that the San Diego Chargers would be a good fit for Sam.
