NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith has insisted that the union will not hesitate to support Michael Sam in any way possible.
Sam will face the unprecedented scenario of being the first openly gay player in NFL history if, as expected, he is chosen in this year's Draft.
NFLPA president Domonique Foxworth said that the organisation will accept Sam with "open arms" if he makes it into the league, and Smith echoed that sentiment.
"This isn't a union that has had a tough time stepping in with two feet to protect the interests of its players," Smith told CSN Washington.
"If there ever came a time where we believe that there was a need for us to do something for this player, or any player similarly situated, I'm sure the league wouldn't be surprised to see a letter from me coming across their desk."
Smith also had strong words to say about a group of NFL general managers who anonymously said that Sam's announcement would harm his chances in the Draft.
