The Kansas City Chiefs have announced that they have placed the franchise tag on linebacker Justin Houston.
The 26-year-old had an impressive campaign for Andy Reid's men as he led the NFL in sacks last season with 22, falling half a sack short of the all-time record set by Michael Strahan.
Despite Houston's level of displays for the Chiefs, the two parties have been unable to come to an agreement over a long-term contract, meaning that he will play the 2015 season out on the tag worth $13.195m (£8.5m).
"Justin is a talented player and a key contributor to our defense," general manager John Dorsey told the club's official website.
"Today was the deadline to designate a franchise player, and it was in the best interest of the club to place the tag on Justin.
"We will continue to discuss long-term options with him and his agent. Our goal is to reach a deal that is mutually beneficial. We want to keep Justin in a Chiefs uniform for years to come."
Houston has recorded 235 tackles, 48.5 sacks and one interception in his four years in the NFL.
