Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt has admitted that the club are hopeful of keeping quarterback Alex Smith beyond when his current deal expires after the 2014 season.
Smith had a solid season for Andy Reid's side, improving them from a 2-14 team in 2012 to 11-5 and a place in the wildcard round of the AFC playoffs this season.
"When we made the trade for him a year ago, that was part of the thinking," Hunt told 810 WHB. "I don't think that thinking has changed.
"He came in and did a nice job. We're glad to have him as a part of the Kansas City Chiefs and we hope it's longer than a two-year stay."
The 29-year-old threw for 3,313 yards along with 23 touchdowns and seven interceptions in the 2013 regular season.
