Bob McNair: 'David Carr needed time to learn'

Houston Texans owner Bob McNair believes that the team was wrong to make David Carr their starting quarterback as a rookie.

Houston Texans owner Bob McNair has said that the team should not have made David Carr their starting quarterback in their first season in the NFL.

The AFC South side used the first pick in the 2002 Draft to acquire the quarterback, but he struggled in his rookie season, completing just nine touchdown passes, 15 interceptions and being sacked a league-record 76 times.

Ahead of this year's Draft, where the Texans will have the number one pick again, McNair told the Houston Chronicle: "I think the main thing I look back on is that we should have had a veteran quarterback in there. We should have let him start the season and let David learn what it takes to be an NFL quarterback."

The Texans already have Ryan Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum and TJ Yates on their roster, but have been linked to selecting former Texas A&M Aggies quarterback Johnny Manziel.
