Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews suffered a potentially season-ending thumb injury during his side's 38-31 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers last night.
Matthews was forced off in the second quarter after hurting his right thumb while sacking Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and was ruled out for the remainder of the game after undergoing medical treatment.
The 27-year-old has already missed four games this season with a broken thumb that required surgery, and Packers coach Mike McCarthy has revealed that early indications show that it is a repeat injury.
"I couldn't give you a timeline, but I think based off the history of what happened the first time, I'm told it's similar to [a] repeat injury," McCarthy told reporters.
Despite the defeat, the Packers remain in control of their own destiny in the NFC North and will reach the playoffs with a win over the Chicago Bears on Sunday.
