Detroit Lions' Joe Lombardi: 'Running game is a work in progress'

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi admits that his side's running game is a "work in progress" following their poor production in the 2014 season.

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi has conceded that his side's running game is a "work in progress".

The Lions were ranked 28th in the NFL in rushing last season as they averaged just 88.9 yards per game with Joique Bell, Theo Riddick and Reggie Bush in their backfield.

The NFC North outfit made the decision to release Bush, leaving just Bell and Riddick to carry the load next season, but Lombardi is optimistic about the duo's future at the club.

"I think it is a work in progress," Lombardi told the club's official website. "Joique [Bell] we love. He's a tough guy. Runs hard. Just keeping him healthy will be key.

"I'm very excited for Theo [Riddick] and have been since I first got here. I think we're going to see great things from him."

The Lions were eliminated in the wildcard round of the playoffs last season by the Dallas Cowboys.
