The Detroit Lions are said to be close to agreeing a contract extension with quarterback Matthew Stafford.

The Detroit Lions have been progressing contract talks with quarterback Matthew Stafford, with reports claiming that it is "just a matter of time" before an agreement is reached.

The NFC North side confirmed that they would be offering the 25-year-old a new deal during this off-season, despite there still being two years left on his rookie contract with the team.

Lions president Tom Lewand told the Detroit Free Press: "There is not a guy that's done more for this franchise in this off-season than Matthew Stafford. The guy's been in the building every day.

"He's been living here the entire off-season. He's been working out, he's helped us recruit free agents, he's been involved on a daily basis in trying to get ready for the season, and he would do anything to help us be successful."

Stafford has averaged over 5,000 passing yards with the Lions during the last two seasons.
