Cleveland Browns name Jim O'Neil as new defensive coordinator

The Cleveland Browns appoint Jim O'Neil as their new defensive coordinator, reuniting him with head coach Mike Pettine.

The Cleveland Browns have appointed Jim O'Neil as their new defensive coordinator.

O'Neil follows head coach Mike Pettine to the team after the duo had worked together with the Buffalo Bills last season, helping the team to a vast improvement in their defensive record.

The 2014 campaign will be the sixth in a row that the pair have worked with each other having spent four years with the New York Jets before their move to Buffalo.

Pettine has also brought a number of other coaches with him from the Bills, including Chuck Driesbach (linebackers), Brian Fleury (assistant linebackers coach) and Jeff Hafley (secondary).

The 47-year-old has retained special teams coordinator Chris Tabor from the previous regime but is still without an offensive coordinator.

The Browns were said to be interested in Gary Kubiak for that role, but his appointment at the Baltimore Ravens means that former Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains is now the frontrunner for the job.
