Northampton Saints have ended Ulster's unbeaten run in this season's Heineken Cup with a narrow 10-9 win at the Ravenhill Stadium.

Gerrit-Jan van Velze's try and five points from the boot of Stephen Myler were enough to earn the English club a valuable victory in Pool 4.

Ulster's last defeat at home in European competition came in 2008.

A Myler penalty opened the scoring for the visitors on seven minutes and the fly-half extended his side's lead midway through the first half when he converted Van Velze's try.

However, two penalties from Paddy Jackson got Ulster on the board by half time.

Jackson reduced Northampton's deficit to just a point at the start of the second half when he kicked between the posts for a third time.

Despite consistent pressure from Ulster in the final 25 minutes, the Saints held on for a famous triumph that has seen them boost their chances of landing a best runner-up spot in the group.
