Sprinter Sacre retired from racing

Trainer Nicky Henderson announces that Sprinter Sacre - one of the greatest two-mile chasers of all time - has been retired due to a leg injury.

Trainer Nicky Henderson has announced that Sprinter Sacre has been retired from racing.

The 10-year-old is widely regarded as one of the greatest two-mile chasers of all time having won the Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham in 2013 and earlier this year.

The latest victory came after a spell out with a fibrillating heart, and the horse has now been retired for good after developing a tendon injury in his leg.

"It is with deep regret that I have to announce the sad news that Sprinter Sacre has been retired. He was the horse of an absolute lifetime," Henderson tweeted.

"We're going to miss him. It has been a great journey and he's been a big part of our lives. It's been a pretty emotional time over the past five or six years and we've loved every moment of it, but all good things have to come to an end."

Sprinter Sacre was paraded at Cheltenham ahead of the Shloer Chase this afternoon.
