A Nottingham Forest supporter is jailed for attacking Sheffield United forward Billy Sharp during a pitch invasion at the City Ground on Tuesday night.

A Nottingham Forest supporter has been jailed after pleading guilty to attacking Sheffield United forward Billy Sharp on Tuesday night.

After Forest had progressed to the Championship playoff final courtesy of a penalty shootout, thousands of fans ran onto the pitch at the City Ground.

Footage soon emerged of a male running head-first into Sharp, who was waiting on the side of the pitch having not participated in the fixture due to injury.

On Wednesday, Nottinghamshire Police said that a male had been arrested on suspicion of assault, the 30-year-old in question now admitting that he was the perpetrator.

Robert Biggs attended Nottingham Magistrates Court on Thursday morning, pleading guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and he has subsequently been handed a 24-week prison sentence.

District Judge Grace Leong said: "The video-clip proves to me that you were running towards Billy Sharp and that you dodged all the other spectators to get towards him. I am of the view that it was a targeted act of aggression, even if it was not premeditated.

"The forceful impact resulted in a very unpleasant injury to Mr Sharp. You must have seen him fall over but you did not stop to check if he was alright or whether he was seriously injured. This is so serious that a custodial sentence must be imposed."

Biggs, who will be given a life ban by Nottingham Forest, did also not oppose being given a football banning order.

After Tuesday's game, Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom revealed that 36-year-old Sharp had been left 'shaken up and left requiring stitches'.
