Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius has been found guilty of culpable homicide following the death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

The six-time Paralympic gold medallist was cleared of premeditated murder and second degree murder, but has been found guilty of the unintentional killing of his girlfriend.

The double amputee fired four gunshots through a locked toilet door in a bathroom at his home in Pretoria, killing the South African model in the early hours of Valentine's Day last year.

Judge Thokozile Masipa delivered the verdict to the High Court this morning after acquitting the athlete of firing a gun through a sunroof and being in illegal possession of ammunition.

The 27-year-old, who denied murder by claiming that he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder, has also been found guilty of discharging a firearm in a restaurant during an incident back in early 2013.

Culpable homicide, which is the equivalent of manslaughter, carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

Sentencing is expected to take place in four to six weeks.
