Jack Nicklaus: 'Youngsters like Jordan Spieth will take over golf'

Jack Nicklaus says that it is a good time for young players, such as Masters champion Jordan Spieth, to "take over" the game of golf.

Jack Nicklaus has said that young golfers have 'energised' the sport.

His comments follow 21-year-old Jordan Spieth's victory at The Masters last week.

"I am someone who likes the new generations. I always have. I think it energises the game of golf," Nicklaus told The Mirror.

"We had Arnold's generation; then it came to my generation; then Tom Watson came along; and right on down the line to Tiger [Woods] and Rory [McIlroy]. And now we have Jordan Spieth.

"There are some older players who have been terrific for a long time, but actually this might be time for the young guys to take over."

Following the victory, Spieth moved up to world number two behind 25-year-old Northern Irishman McIlroy.
