Stoke City's Jack Butland targets England call-up

Stoke City keeper Jack Butland is eyeing a call-up to the England squad following his impressive performance against Norwich City.

Stoke City keeper Jack Butland has targeted a call-up to the England squad following his solid display against Norwich City.

The 22-year-old kept the Canaries at bay with a series of fine stops at Carrow Road to earn his side a point, leading to chants from Stoke's supporters branding him "England's number one".

Butland's display was made more remarkable by the fact that he was suffering from a fractured knuckle, which required a long discussion with the club's medical staff before he decided to play through the pain barrier.

He told reporters: "It is brilliant to hear, hopefully it leads to a call up. I am lucky enough to have been there before and I understand it. I have got one cap and that is certainly a target for me to get back in that squad and it is what I want to do.

"It was my decision to play. I had an X-ray, we were optimistic it was a small fracture on the knuckle, not the finger on the top or bottom, and we managed to get the swelling down.

"We had a discussion over the last couple of days about what we were going to do and decided if we can manage the pain, I felt sharp and confident to play. It didn't cause me any problems. It feels good but we have some work to do this week to get the swelling down and keep improving it but it was important to get through the game."

Butland's solitary England cap came against Italy in 2012.
