Roy Hodgson: 'Wayne Rooney not guaranteed England place'

England boss Roy Hodgson says that captain Wayne Rooney is not guaranteed a place in the team.

England manager Roy Hodgson has claimed that his captain Wayne Rooney is not guaranteed a spot in the Three Lions team.

The 29-year-old became the nation's leading goalscorer by netting his 50th in England's 2-0 victory over Switzerland at Wembley earlier this month, but he has been less than prolific at club level.

Rooney has only scored one Premier League goal in six games this season for Manchester United, and has been criticised for his lack of influence on games.

Despite having the captain's armband for his country, Rooney still has to fight for his place in the setup.

"I have been in football a long time and Wayne Rooney has been in football a long time," Hodgson told reporters. "He would regard me as someone who is very false if I ever said to him your place is guaranteed.

"He would not expect it and I would be very upset if anyone asked me to give them a guarantee of a place. No-one else has ever done."

Rooney was named in the 24-man squad for next week's final Euro 2016 qualifiers against Estonia and Lithuania.
