Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert insists that the best team won the Premier League after Manchester United secured the title with victory over his side.

Paul Lambert has insisted that Manchester United were deserving winners of the Premier League title after they secured the championship with victory over his Aston Villa side on Monday.

A hat-trick from Robin van Persie earned the Red Devils a 3-0 win at Old Trafford, a result that opened up an unassailable 16-point gap over rivals Manchester City.

Lambert told reporters: "Manchester United have worked really hard for each other, they have a winning mentality and the best team always wins the league."

The defeat left Villa three points clear of the top-flight relegation zone.
