Millwall ease past Leeds United

Millwall get their Championship season off to a winning start with a 2-0 victory against Leeds United, as Dave Hockaday loses his first game in charge of the Whites.

Goals at either end of the game gave Millwall a 2-0 win against Leeds United on the opening day of the Championship season.

Mark Beevers got the ball rolling after eight minutes before Shaun Williams netted from the penalty spot with four minutes remaining.

Beevers gave the home side the lead when he slid the ball into the net to make the most of a static Leeds defence following a short corner.

The defender nearly had his second of the game five minutes later, but he headed just wide after rising highest from another set piece.

Leeds tried to get back into the game, but Lions goalkeeper David Forde was alert on a couple of occasions to thwart attacks from the visitors.

Ricardo Fuller robbed Scott Wooton of possession towards the end of the half, but crucially slipped as he went through on goal.

Leeds manager Dave Hockaday brought Matt Smith on in place of Noel Hunt in an effort to turn things around, but it was the Lions who continued to and press and Martyn Woolford had a penalty appeal turned down just before the hour mark.

The Londoners were awarded a spot kick late on and it was left to Williams to wrap up the points for Ian Holloway's side.
