Sports Mole previews Wednesday's Women's European Championship clash between England Women and Spain Women, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

With the group stages now completed of Women's Euro 2022, the first quarter-final will see England go head-to-head with Spain at the Amex Stadium on Sunday.

England won all three matches to top their group, while Spain finished behind Germany after winning two of their three games at the tournament so far.

England remain firmly in the hunt to win their first major tournament after easing through the group stage to secure their place in the knockout rounds.

A narrow 1-0 victory against Austria in the tournament opener was followed by a historic 8-0 win over Norway, with England breaking their own record for the biggest victory at the UEFA Women's European Championships.

Although top spot was already assured ahead of their final group game against Northern Ireland, the tournament hosts showed no signs of letting up.

Fran Kirby and Beth Mead grabbed a goal apiece in the first half before an Alessia Russo brace and a Kelsie Burrows own goal wrapped up a comfortable 5-1 victory.

After cruising through the group stages, Sarina Wiegman will turn her attention to Wednesday's game, with England aiming to reach the semi-finals of the European Championships for the fifth time in their history.

While England made light work of the group phase, Spain had to fight hard for their place in the quarter-finals.

La Roja began the tournament with a comfortable 4-1 victory over Finland, but a 2-0 defeat to Germany on matchday two ensured that they would have to take a point from their final group game against Denmark.

Despite dominating possession, Spain found it difficult to find a way through Denmark's stubborn defence until Marta Cardona scored a 90th minute winner to set up a quarter-final date against England.

After being eliminated at the quarter-final stage in the last two editions of the European Championships, Spain will be dreaming of a place in the semi-finals for only the second-time in their history.

Although England may be favourites, one defeat in their last 26 matches suggests that Spain can cause the tournament hosts problems on Wednesday.

Team News

Alessia Russo celebrates scoring for England against Northern Ireland on July 15, 2022© Reuters

After winning all three group games, Wiegman is expected to name an unchanged lineup for the fourth consecutive game.

An unchanged side would mean that Russo has to settle for a place on the bench once again despite scoring three goals in the group phase as a substitute.

After scoring five goals - including a hat-trick against Norway - Mead is the current tournament topscorer and she will be aiming to carry her goalscoring form into the knockout rounds.

As for Spain, they are expected to name an unchanged back four, with Irene Paredes set to continue her centre-back partnership with Barcelona teammate Mapi Leon.

Jorge Vilda could be tempted to present Cardona with her first start of the tournament after the Real Madrid player came off the bench to score the winner against Denmark.

Esther Gonzalez could also come into the starting XI to lead the line following a substitute appearance against Denmark.

England Women possible starting lineup:
Earps; Bronze, Bright, Williamson, Daly; Stanway, Walsh; Mead, Kirby, Hemp; White

Spain Women possible starting lineup:
Panos; Batlle, Paredes, Leon, Ouahabi; Bonmati, Guijarro, Caldentey; L. Garcia, Cardona, Gonzalez

We say: England Women 2-1 Spain Women

We expect a close-fought game when two sides that are hard to beat come face-to-face, however, England looked in dominant form in the group stage, and we think that they will utilise home advantage to edge out Spain in Wednesday's quarter-final.
