Preview: Charlton Athletic vs. Ipswich Town - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League One clash between Charlton Athletic and Ipswich Town, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Charlton Athletic will be bidding to make it three straight wins in all competitions when they continue their League One campaign at home to Ipswich Town on Tuesday night.

The home side are currently 15th in the League One table, collecting 23 points from their opening 20 matches, while Ipswich occupy 11th spot with 27 points to show from their first 20 games of 2021-22.

Match preview

Charlton have played twice since their last League One match on November 27, which ended in a 1-0 defeat at Shrewsbury Town, triumphing in both the EFL Trophy and FA Cup.

Indeed, the Addicks beat Aston Villa Under-21s 2-1 in the EFL trophy at the end of November before securing their spot in the third round of the FA Cup courtesy of a 2-0 victory at Gateshead on Friday.

Charlton's league form has been inconsistent for much of the campaign, boasting a record of six wins, five draws and nine defeats from 20 matches, which has seen them collect 23 points to sit 15th in the table.

Johnnie Jackson remains in charge of the club on a caretaker basis, and it has been a disappointing League One campaign thus far for a team that finished seventh in the third tier last term, only missing out on the playoffs on goal difference.

The London outfit are unbeaten in their last three matches against Ipswich in all competitions, although two of those encounters have finished goalless, including the corresponding game last term.

Ipswich, meanwhile, will enter this contest off the back of a goalless draw with Barrow in the FA Cup on Saturday, so the two sides will have to lock horns once again in a replay.

Paul Cook was sacked as head coach following the clash with Barrow, which meant that the club had won just two of their last nine matches in all competitions.

In a statement released on the club's official website, Ipswich's chief executive Mark Ashton said: "At this moment, there is no one lined up to replace Paul. There will be an extensive search to find the best replacement for the club."

The Blues, at the time of writing, are yet to name a caretaker manager for this match, but Ashton is expected to make an announcement on Monday.

Ipswich, who finished ninth in League One last season, are currently 11th in the table, seven points off the playoffs, while they have been victorious in just one of their last four league encounters - the 2-1 home success over Crewe Alexandra on November 28.

Team News

Stephen Henderson, Deji Elerewe, Diallang Jaiyesimi and Jayden Stockley all came into the Charlton side for the FA Cup clash with Gateshead, and the latter netted a brace in an impressive performance.

Stockley could now retain his spot in the starting XI for this match, while Jaiyesimi will hope to have done enough to keep his position in the team.

There will be changes from the weekend, though, with Craig MacGillivray set to return between the sticks, while Ben Purrington will return in a defensive area for the home side.

As for Ipswich, it is difficult to know exactly what to expect in terms of team selection following the exit of Cook.

George Edmundson, Sone Aluko and Bersant Celina dropped out of the side for Saturday's FA Cup affair with Barrow, but all three players are expected to return to the starting side here.

Macauley Bonne has been in impressive form for the Blues this season, meanwhile, netting 11 times in League One, and the 26-year-old will feature at the tip of the attack.

Charlton Athletic possible starting lineup:
MacGillivray; Clare, Purrington, Famewo; Jaiyesimi, Gilbey, Dobson, Lee, Souare; Washington, Stockley

Ipswich Town possible starting lineup:
Walton; Donacien, Nsiala, Edmundson, Clements; Morsy, Fraser; Aluko, Chaplin, Celina; Bonne

We say: Charlton Athletic 1-1 Ipswich Town

Charlton could face a backlash from Ipswich following Cook's departure, and it is set to be a very interesting match on Tuesday evening. It would not be a surprise to see a home or an away victory here, but we just have a feeling that a cagey affair could end in a low-scoring draw.
