Maxwel Cornet's Burnley contract contains a release clause allowing him to leave the club for a set fee should they be relegated, according to a report.

Burnley's Maxwel Cornet has a release clause in his contract allowing him to leave the club for a set fee should they be relegated, according to a report.

Despite the Clarets struggling for Premier League survival this year, the Ivorian has impressed in his debut campaign in the English top flight following his £13.5m move from Lyon last summer.

The Ivorian has netted eight goals in 24 league appearances so far, meaning he is the club's top goalscorer during their disappointing season.

Despite the forward having four years left on the five-year contract signed upon joining, Mike Jackson's side may be left powerless in Cornet's situation if the club suffer relegation in the coming weeks, according to a report from The Athletic.

The report suggests that the 25-year-old's contract contains a £17.5m release clause, which becomes active if the Lancashire club drop down to the Championship.

Following Leeds United's late equaliser against Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, Burnley dropped into the bottom three after losing 1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur earlier in the day.

The Clarets remain just one point behind Leeds however, with a game in hand on their fellow strugglers, which they will play on Thursday against Aston Villa.
