Caretaker boss Gary O'Neil admits that he was left frustrated with the use of VAR as it contributed to Bournemouth losing 2-0 at West Ham United on Monday evening.

Bournemouth caretaker boss Gary O'Neil has acknowledged that he was furious with how VAR contributed to their 2-0 defeat at West Ham United on Monday evening.

A Kurt Zouma header and a Said Benrahma penalty - scored at the end of each half - earned the Hammers all three points in the Premier League fixture at the London Stadium.

However, there was controversy surrounding both goals, particularly the opener after Thilo Kehrer handled the ball at the first point of contact from a corner.

Seconds later, Zouma flicked the ball into the corner with his head, yet VAR deemed that Kehrer's hands were in a natural position and did not directly lead to the scoring of a goal.

The decision to award West Ham a late penalty stemmed from a cross hitting the arm of Jordan Zemura as he slid in to block a cross just inside the penalty area.

Despite there being minimal distance between Vladimir Coufal and Zemura, as well as the latter's arm coming back down towards his body, a spot kick was awarded.

Speaking to Sky Sports News after the match, O'Neil did not hide his frustration, revealing that he and the referee 'disagreed' over both calls.

O'Neil said: "I thought a foul in the build-up was possible just before the handball. A cute one but we were penalised at Fulham for Jefferson Lerma fouling [Aleksandar] Mitrovic. The feedback was because Lerma wasn't looking at the ball. Flynn Downes impedes [Marcos] Senesi without looking at the ball. He has no intention of playing the ball.

"It's a blatant handball. His hand moves towards the ball. I'm not surprised because it's getting ridiculous. Since I've been here there's been 10 serious VAR checks and none have gone our way."

On the second-half penalty, O'Neil added: "We disagree [on the penalty]. He says Zemura's arm was in an unnatural position. I disagree with that. His arms are propelling when he's sliding in. They were on the way back down. He's not trying to gain an advantage.

"These things going against us. On the goal he said his arm was in a natural position. I disagree. They're in both at his stomach and move to the ball. There was one I haven't seen with Ben Johnson handling, we didn't get as well."

Having initially started his temporary stint with six matches without defeat, O'Neil has now witnessed his side lose to Southampton and West Ham.

Fourteenth-placed Bournemouth are next in action when they play host to Tottenham Hotspur on October 29.
