Freiburg stun Bayern Munich

Freiburg edge out champions Bayern Munich 2-1 to boost their hopes of survival in the Bundesliga.

Freiburg gave their survival hopes a shot in the arm with a surprise 2-1 win over champions Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga this afternoon.

Bayern thought that they had taken the lead early on, but Mehdi Benatia's header was ruled out for a push.

The visitors opened the scoring on 13 minutes when Bastian Schweinsteiger converted from close range after good work from Mitchell Weiser.

Bayern almost doubled their advantage before the half-hour mark, but Jerome Boateng could only head straight at Freiburg keeper Roman Burki.

Amir Mehmedi levelled things up on 33 minutes with a smart finish from 20 yards.

Mehmedi was in the thick of action once more after the restart, and the striker was furious when his penalty appeals were waved away after he went down under a challenge from Rafinha.

Schweinsteiger almost claimed his second when he swivelled on the ball and curled an effort against the crossbar on 70 minutes.

Freiburg continued to press for the lead and Manuel Neuer denied Christian Gunter's long-range effort with 15 minutes to go.

Mario Gotze went close for Bayern moments later, but the World Cup winner could only poke just wide of Burki's goal after the keeper had rushed out to close him down.

Thiago Alcantara almost scored a late winner, but the former Barcelona youngster's 20-yard effort was saved by Burki.

However, it was Freiburg who struck the final goal, and it was Nil Petersen who stabbed home in the 89th minute to make it three straight league defeats for the champions.
