Stefan Effenberg takes charge of SC Paderborn

Former midfielder Stefan Effenberg takes on his first coaching role since retirement by becoming head coach of German second-tier outfit SC Paderborn.

Former Bayern Munich midfielder Stefan Effenberg has become a head coach for the first time by taking charge of SC Paderborn.

The 47-year-old was confirmed as the new head coach of the 2. Bundesliga outfit on a contract until the end of the 2016-17 season.

"I've been thinking seriously about becoming a head coach for a while now," Effenberg told reporters.

"Paderborn is a great place for me to enter into this profession, as the impressive careers of my predecessors show.

"Paderborn have a lot of quality within the squad and we've now got to form a successful team out of this as quickly as possible."

Effenberg replaces Markus Gellhaus, who had only been appointed in the summer following the club's relegation from the Bundesliga.

Paderborn have won just one of their opening 10 league games this season to lie a point outside the relegation places.
