Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell defends the club's recruitment strategy after Paul Merson claimed he could "do a better job" than technical director Edu.

Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell has hit out at Paul Merson for his criticism of the Gunners' summer transfer strategy.

The Gunners spent more than any other Premier League club in the most recent window, with six arrivals all aged 23 or under in Nuno Tavares, Albert Sambi Lokonga, Ben White, Aaron Ramsdale, Martin Odegaard and Takehiro Tomiyasu making the switch to North London.

However, Joe Willock's sale to Newcastle United represented Arsenal's only notable sale from the summer window, and Merson recently claimed that he could "do a better job" than technical director Edu.

Campbell believes that the pundit will think twice should the points start rolling in for Arsenal, though, saying: "Again, this seems to be a recurring situation with Merse, at times," in quotes attributed to football.london.

"Yes, Merse is a Chelsea fan. But he has played for the Arsenal. He has had great times at Arsenal. Again, it's his opinion. But it's the way it is done is the tough part. I watch it and I shake my head. I just think 'Oh no, no'.

"I am watching and thinking 'Merse, don't go there, don't go there, don't even go there'. When things change, sometimes the opinions change and they come out with 'I told you so'. Always remember, log it down and write in the diary."

Arsenal boast zero points and zero goals in the 2021-22 Premier League season before the visit of Norwich City after the international break.
