Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning could retire at the end of this season depending on the state of his surgically repaired neck, according to reports.

Manning has enjoyed arguably the best season of his glittering career so far in 2013, breaking the single-season records for passing yards with 5,477 and touchdown passes with 55.

The 37-year-old threw two more touchdowns during last night's 24-17 victory over the San Diego Chargers to reach the AFC championship game against the New England Patriots as he looks for a second Super Bowl success.

However, despite a record-breaking campaign, Manning's contract dictates that he must undergo a physical exam on his neck during the off-season, which will determine whether he can continue or not.

Manning missed the entire 2011 season after undergoing two operations on his neck while still with the Indianapolis Colts, and he could decide to retire if the exam shows an increased risk of injury, according to ESPN.

The four-time NFL MVP recently admitted that his career was coming to an end, outlining his desire to make the most of the time he had left in the game.
