British surgeon warns Winter Olympic spectators taking to the slopes

A British surgeon warns fans travelling to the Winter Olympics in Sochi to 'prepare properly' before taking to the slopes themselves.

A British surgeon has warned spectators travelling to the Winter Olympics to prepare themselves properly before getting onto the slopes.

With thousands of fans travelling to Sochi this month, consultant orthopaedic surgeon Christopher Bailey has said that spectators often enter the slopes "with poor preparation".

He told the Daily Echo: "I have no doubt that amateur sportsmen and women will venture to the slopes and the ice rinks this winter having been inspired or motivated by the heroes of the snow and ice.

"However if people have been inactive or they haven't prepared their muscles or stepped up fitness levels they could well be in trouble.

"All too often people don't consider the serious consequences that can occur with poor preparation."

80% of tickets available for the Games have already been sold.
