Vladimir Putin aims swipe at Sochi detractors

Russian president Vladimir Putin says that criticism of the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi is unfair.

Western criticism of the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi is reminiscent of Cold War ambitions to hold the Soviet Union back, according to Russian president Vladimir Putin.

The Games has been overshadowed by a contentious "anti-gay propaganda" law and allegations of corruption.

In a televised public meeting in Sochi, Putin told reporters: "Back in Cold War times the theory of containment was created.

"This theory and its practice were aimed at restraining the development of the Soviet Union... what we see now are echoes of this containment theory.

"This, unfortunately, has also applied to the Olympic project."

The Games are into day four, having officially opened on Friday.
