Maria Komissarova sent to Germany for further treatment

Russian skier Maria Komissarova is transferred to a specialist clinic in Munich for further treatment on her injured back.

Russian Federation ski cross racer Maria Komissarova has been transferred to Germany for further treatment on the back injury which she sustained at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

Komissarova suffered the "serious injury" during a practice run on Saturday, leading to six hours of surgery over the weekend.

According to the Japan Times, 23-year-old Komissarova has now been airlifted to a new specialist, in the hope of aiding her recovery.

A statement from the the Russian freestyle ski federation read: "Maria Komissarova was rendered all necessary medical care at this stage by Russian doctors.

"By the decision of her relatives, she is being sent for further treatment to a clinic in Munich, Germany, specializing in the treatment of this kind of injury."

Komissarova has already suffered one career-threatening injury, with a leg injury keeping her out of action for almost six months last year.
