International Olympic Committee: 'Maria Komissarova accident unfortunate'

Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee, maintains that the Sochi course was not to blame for Maria Komissarova's accident yesterday.

The president of the International Olympic Committee has maintained that the Sochi course was not to blame for Maria Komissarova's accident.

The Russian Federation freestyle skier suffered a serious injury during a training session yesterday, but Thomas Bach believes that it had nothing to do with the infrastructure at the Extreme Park.

"Ski-cross is a sport with a certain risk," Bach is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail. "You will never be able to exclude any kind of risk. We feel very sorry for the athlete. We are in contact with the hospital.

"The first information is that it was nothing to do with the infrastructure, or the snow conditions.

"It was in a training session and this unfortunate incident happened. We will see how it goes. Now our thoughts are with the athlete."

Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili was killed in a training accident on the eve of the 2010 Games in Vancouver.
